How to rest and grow in between calls and in retirement

DECATUR, Georgia — Everyday God-talk, a video series produced by the Office of Theology and Worship, debuted its fourth season on Thursday.

The Rev. Dr. So Jung Kim

The Rev. Dr. So Jung Kim, associate for Theology, describes the series as a space where we “talk about God in everyday language and through everyday perspectives.” Kim sees the video interviews as a way to “bridge the gap between what’s going on at church, what’s happening in our everyday lives, and many theologians in the U.S. and beyond.”

The series has featured thoughtful people across the denomination, from mid council leaders to Presbyterian Mission Agency leaders to seminary professors and staff. The pilot season debuted in 2020 and featured theologians from various seminaries and divinity schools such as Catherine Keller, Joerg Rieger, Jaco Hamman, Reggie Williams as well as representatives from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Presbyterian Hunger Program, Self-Development of People, mission co-workers in Korea, and women of color leaders at the World Council of Churches. Season One took a deep dive into John Calvin’s theology surrounding Creation and considered it in light of various aspects of climate change. Season Two invited leaders active in mid council and General Assembly leadership to talk more deeply about their spirituality around a framework of the body, heart and soul.

“The new season of Everyday God-talk shares the stories of those who are resting and growing — pastors and teachers in between calls, on sabbatical and retired,” said Kim who invites guests to share spiritual insights, practical wisdom and embodied practices to offer their “everyday two cents about how to rest and grow.”

In the first episode triptych,  Monica Stevens, a yoga and meditation teacher, and the Rev. Dr. Bob Cathey, a retired PC(USA) minister and professor of theology at McCormick Theological Seminary, share their tips for guided meditation and yoga for the aging soul, body and heart in three short videos available on the Office of Theology and Worship Facebook page and on its YouTube Channel.

In February, Kim will talk with Yena Hwang about how to rest and grow in between calls and sabbaticals. Future episodes will feature Cynthia Jarvis, Barbara Cathey and Bob Cathey on how to rest and grow in retirement. Episodes will appear monthly from January through May.
